October Lessons
Bully Prevention Month: This month I concentrated with 1st-4th grades on the subject of bullying. I want Fairfield to be the place possible and minimizing bullying is a key factor in achieving that goal.
Kindergarten
In Kindergarten we focused on using our listening skills. We read "Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns to Listen." Howard was having a difficult time listening to his teacher, which got him into a bit of trouble. The students then worked on a listening activity. They needed to use their listening skills to color a picture. The twist was that they needed to follow my directions to color the picture. They are well on their way to being great bucket fillers and ROAR kindergarteners.

1st GradeWhen you think of bully what comes to your mind...a Ladybug of course! The grouchy ladybug bullied his way around numerous other animals until he ends up right back where he started. He did not want to share breakfast with others and instantly wanted to fight those around him. That plan did not work in his favor. We spoke about times that makes us grouchy which can lead to us not being the nicest of people to others. We do not want to be a grouchy ladybug!

2nd GradeThe Tease Monster...AHHHH. The book does a terrific job explaining that there are two different types of teasing, nice or mean. Nice teases can build a relationship while a mean tease takes away from a friendship. Students were able to share when they have teased someone or when they have been teased themselves. Mean teases we cannot take back, once our words are out there that is how they stay. We used a tube of toothpaste to demonstrate how difficult it is to take back our words. Always think before you speak to make sure we are not intentionally hurting someone's feelings.

3rd and 4th grade
I spent time with the students explaining exactly what bullying means and how to handle bullying situations. The students took a pre test earlier in the month documenting their understanding of bullying. After the lesson was completed we then took the post test to find out if they had learned anything. The students did gain a knowledge of the different types, but only time will tell if they chose to stand up for each other and make Fairfield a bully free school. Take a look at my presentation here
